Simply Baked Tofu
Baking your own tofu is cheaper and healthier than purchasing pre-baked versions. All it takes are three ingredients (including the tofu!) and the marinade is easily customized to fit whatever tastes or cuisine you are cooking. Nutritional yeast can be added to provide a "chicken-like" flavor, and different spices like basil, onion powder, or even jerk seasoning can be added as per your taste. Pre-freezing and thawing your tofu imparts a "meatier" texture, and turns the tofu into a virtual sponge, pulling in any marinade that you put it in.
- 1 block tofu extra firm, frozen and defrosted
- 1/3 cup soy sauce gluten free shoyu/tamari, or liquid aminos
- 1 tbsp garlic minced
- Press your block of tofu for approximately 15 minutes. If you have a tofu press, this is the best way to achieve an even press. If not, you can also place the tofu between two plates and place something heavy on top, like a large book, frying pan, or a few heavy cans.
- Meanwhile, stir together soy sauce and minced garlic in a medium bowl.
- When tofu is finished pressing, dry off with paper towels or clean cotton towel and cut into cubes. Toss cubes in soy sauce/garlic mixture. Allow to marinate for ten minutes.
- Preheat oven to 475°F.
- Arrange tofu cubes on baking sheet, lined with a silicone mat or parchment paper to assure that they don't stick.
- Bake tofu for 10-15 minutes, or until brown and crispy, turning over halfway through cooking time.
